Oakdale Cemetery Tours

SPECIALTY TOURS

April 1, 2018 – 2:00 – 4:00 pm (EASTER SUNDAY)

Oakdale Cemetery Funerary Art Tour will be held on Easter Sunday, The tour will be led by architectural historian, Janet Seapker, who will explain the evolution of the rural cemetery and the opening of Oakdale Cemetery in 1855. Janet Seapker will focus on the symbolism of Victorian funerary art. $10.00 for non-members; FREE for members. Tours are cancelled in event of inclement weather.

April 21, 2018 (Saturday)

Horticultural Tour with Eric Kozen, Superintendent. Mr. Kozen has decades of horticultural experience and will delight you with the knowledge of the flora of Oakdale. There are truly magnificent specimens found in Oakdale and Mr. Kozen will tour the grounds showing off the true gems of a rural garden cemetery. Tour begins at 10:00am and will last about two hours. $10.00 for non-members; FREE for members. Tours are cancelled in event of inclement weather.

May 19, 2018 (Saturday) – Summer Walking Tour Series

Summer Walking Tour Series. MUSIC and MAUSOLEUMS TOUR. Historical walking tours of North Carolina’s oldest rural cemetery will be given by local architectural historian, Ed Turberg. Mr. Turberg will lead you to those interesting mausoleums in Oakdale and tell the history of these prominent structures. You will also be delighted to experience a musician at some of the mausoleums providing some enjoyable melodies (bagpiper, harper, flutist and violinist). Tour is from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Cost of the tour is $15.00 per person. Tours are cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

June 16, 2018 (Saturday)

Summer Walking Tour Series. Historical walking tour of North Carolina’s oldest rural cemetery will be given by the Cemetery Superintendent, Eric Kozen who will take you on a journey of the past. He will focus on the beginnings of the cemetery as well as explain some of the funerary art and some tales of those who are laid to rest here. Tour is from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. $10.00 for non-members and FREE to members. Tours are cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

July 21, 2018 (Saturday) – FLASHLIGHT TOUR

Historical walking tours of North Carolina’s oldest rural cemetery will be given by local historians, Chris Fonvielle, Robin Triplett and Superintendent Eric Kozen. Each of these historians will lead you through the cemetery and speak about the history of Oakdale, Civil War veterans, Funerary Art as well as a taste of Oakdale’s prominent citizens. Tour is from 8:00 pm till 10:00 pm. Cost is $15.00 per person and you must supply your own flashlight. Tours are cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

August 18, 2018 (Saturday) – FLASHLIGHT TOUR

Historical walking tours of North Carolina’s oldest rural cemetery will be given by local historians, Chris Fonvielle, Robin Triplett and Superintendent Eric Kozen. Each of these historians will lead you through the cemetery and speak about the history of Oakdale, Civil War veterans, Funerary Art as well as a taste of Oakdale’s prominent citizens. Tour is from 7:30 pm till 9:30 pm. Cost is $15.00 per person and you must supply your own flashlight. Tours are cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

October 20, 2018 (Saturday) – Summer Walking Tour Series

Historical walking tours of North Carolina’s oldest rural cemetery will be given by local historian, Janet Davidson. Mrs. Davidson will take you on a journey through time and delight you with the history of World War I and some interesting tales of those who are interred at Oakdale Cemetery. Tour is from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. $10.00 for non-members and FREE to members. Tours are cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

November 10th, 2018 – (Saturday)

Historical walking tours of North Carolina’s oldest rural cemetery will be given by local historian, David Rice. Mr. Rice will be accompanied by the Superintendent Eric Kozen as they take you back to the time of the (Spanish) Flu Epidemic in 1918. One of the most deadly worldwide epidemics that occurred right as WWI was ending. Tour is from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. $10.00 for non-members and FREE to members. Tours are cancelled in the event of inclement weather.
